In many places, when you have asked your landlord several times (in writing) to make specific repairs and they haven’t, then you are allowed to take matters into your own hands.

For instance, in one place I lived we were allowed to ask our landlord (in writing) to make a certain repair. He then had 30 days to get it done or provide an alternative. If he didn’t get it done in 30 days, then we were allowed to call an independent repairman to come and do the work, pay for it ourselves, then take the amount we paid the repairman and deduct it from our monthly rent.

I’m NOT saying this is exactly how it works where you live, but you should contact someone in local government where you live and ask them how to find out about “renter’s rights.” You have rights as a renter…don’t think otherwise. Good luck!
